Stanford....and Cal

1942 - 1944

Pat wasn't allowed to go away to college immediately after high school--her parents thought she was too young--so she went to Ventura Junior College for a year. The following year she did go away, to Stanford, where she had the time of her life, as did Marge, who joined her a year later. They rode the train back and forth most times, and (!!) they sent their laundry home on the train for their mother to do--which I guess a lot of people did. Pat lived in a dorm, and roomed with Janice (later Talbot, I don't know her maiden name), who became a lifelong friend. Pat loved the classes--especially "Western Civ"-- and the world of the intellect opened up to her. She had always been a reader, but after Stanford she felt....like a citizen of the world maybe, and kept up with world events, politics, and theater. She was intellectually fearless, she felt she could understand and consider any set of ideas and was interested in doing so. After her Junior year, she married Lon Monk, went to live with him in Berkeley, and so finished her degree at Cal. ("Cal" is what Stanford people call UC Berkeley. Berkeley people call it "Berkeley"). I have her Phi Beta Kappa key. Fortunately, Dora saved all the letters that Pat and Marge wrote from Stanford, and I will put Pat's on this site when I figure out how to do it.
